Fruit Picking / Backpacking in Europe, Canada, OZ and NZ ??

Looking for first hand information on this:

It has just been suggested by a friend that we get away for a couple of months this year and go fruit picking / backpacking.

I know you can do this all year round in OZ and NZ, and that Canada has a long fruit picking season (ending around August); also France, Spain and Italy do this too.

But has anybody actually done this; does it pay; whats the work like?

The way i hear it is you get free accommodation, food, use of the facilities and either a daily rate or paid by the Kg. In return you work shifts in the fields / orchards picking fruit.

If you want to move on you can have the owner call ahead to other locations, and pre arrange work.

Some of the online guides are saying earning rates of £30-£60 per day; can this be right.

Looking for anybody thats actually dont this - Not second hand info.

Fruit Picking / Backpacking in Europe, Canada, OZ and NZ ??
I don't have first hand knowledge, but I live in cetral Europe and I know people who do and have done this so I can tell you what I know from this.

In Europe, fruit pickers tend to go from east to west, meaning from poorer countries to richer ones, usually not for travel but to make money. Accomodation is not ideal, and unless you have your own car, travelling around is a bit difficult, on top of which if you don't know the native language- or even if you do- you should expect people to scam you.

From what I've heard NZ, you can pick fruit and live ok there. The money you make pays for your living expenses but not the extra stuff (this seems to be true most places). Remember that this is work people in that country generally don't want to do, so it's not highly paid.

In the end, if you pick fruit, choose a place where everyday you go there, it amazes you. If you are bored after a week, then you've chosen the wrong place.
Reply:If you are of Asian appearance then the immigration authorities will get suspicious and assume you are an illegal immigrant and round you up and deport you.
Reply:Fruit picking is shite. Takes all day, its knackering and you see bugger all of the country. Save your money and go on holiday.

CoWorker dropped my fruit cup?

I was already having a rotten morning when a coworker accidentally dropped my fresh fruit cup from the company's fridge. It was a fresh fruit cup I was so seriously looking forward to and it cost me $4.00. Should I (a) Ask for for $4.00 so I can go buy a new one (b) Forget about it (c) Ask her to buy me a replacement fruit cup tomorrow at the place I got it or (d) Let her buy me a fruit tomorrow from the place of her choice? Seriously this was one awesome looking fresh fruit cup.

CoWorker dropped my fruit cup?
What's the relationship? Is she a coworker you like, a supervisor, or what? What did she say?

If she has any sense she'll replace it. You may have waited too long, next time ask for the replacement right away. She'll think it's odd that you were brooding over the fruit all day. Also, don't use the company fridge. People do wierd stuff like eat or drop other people's food.
Reply:For Christ sakes let it go ... Do NOT Start a war over a fruit cup .

For future reference ask for a bag next time and leave it in the bag.
Reply:Even tho it was an accident, she should have offered some sort of compensation and apologised. If she didn't offer compensation, I would have said something right then to prompt her, like, "Figures. Now I have to go get something else to have for lunch." or "Now I have nothing to eat for break/lunch." Or, "Man! That cost me FOUR BUCKS!"

(for me, 4 bucks is a lot of money for a snack)

After that, it is in her hands. If she doesn't do the right thing, then all you can do is keep that in mind in future dealings with her and act in accordance with what you now know you can expect from her. Also consider packing your snack/lunch carefully if you're going to put it in the office fridge, to try to protect it from such clumsy, selfish people. Maybe the place you bought it from would tape the lid on, and put it in a bag for you?
Reply:Some days are diamonds. Some days are coal.

Unless the coworker volunteers or you're so desperate for money you'd eat your keyboard, forget about it.

If the coworker volunteers to replace the fruit cup then it should be from where you bought it - not of her choice.
Reply:Unless she offers, you should forget about it. The polite thing for her to to would have been to offer a replacement immediately, but not all people have manners. I don't know how long you've waited since it happened, but it's probably going to start looking strange if you ask her about it now.
Reply:b) forget about it, unless she offers to buy you another fruit cup
Reply:Next time you see her put something in the fridge, take it out and throw it away after she leaves. Make sure you push it way down in the trash. Hey, it WILL make you feel better! heh Especially since she didn't offer to get you another fruit cup!
Reply:what did she do say oops and then oh well. get your $4
Reply:Well, you answered your own question and you got a new, more expensive organic fruit cup. Sounds like a good day!
Reply:ask her to buy you another today while she goes out to lunch. Or she needs to get you some other lunch! You had a lunch she ruined it... she should replace it.
Reply:B.
Reply:Yes forget about it..it will only make you look cheap..she SHOULD replace it but if not...be the bigger person..not George Costanza
Reply:Quit being a fruit and forget the freakin cup already.....
Reply:b) Forget about it. Accidents just happen. Or maybe it was karma. Maybe there was some bad unseen bacteria in that fruit. The co-worker might have saved you from serious illness or even death. For good or ill, you just weren't meant to have that fruit cup. Let it go.
Reply:Just forget about it,she should offer to buy you one,or just buy one dont even offer.

What are your favorite fruit(s) and vegetable(s) to eat and why? what about your least favorites?

Just curious what types of fruits and vegetables people enjoy eating. Note that tomatoes and avocadoes (and I guess cucumbers as well, because they have seeds?) are fruits as well, even though we might tend to consider them as vegetables because they are neither sweet/sour as fruits generally are.

As for myself, I try to enjoy most fruits and vegetables but my favorites include (in no particular order):

fruit: banana, apple, mango, avocado, tomato (the latter two for guacamole!)

vegetable: enjoy most vegetables but prefer the more nutritious ones (e.g. greens, carrots, etc)

least favorite

fruits: grapefruit...its all right but has a bitter after-taste

vegetables: bitter gourd...umm...I prefer it when fried and chopped up into small pieces

The fruits which I listed as favorites were there because I like the way they taste and they're fairly easy to prepare before eating. I especially like the sweetness of bananas and the cleansing healthy feeling after eating an apple.

What are your favorite fruit(s) and vegetable(s) to eat and why? what about your least favorites?
fav. veggie: spinach...because it can be prep'd many ways and it always makes me feel healthy (and it's delicious, of course)

fav. fruit: pineapple...when they're ripe and in season, I can eat mountains of them!

least fav. veggie: brussel sprouts. even though they're tolerable as an adult, I'll never get the smell/taste out of my mind of when I was a child and was forced to eat them. I can still remember what overcooked brussel spouts and milk taste like together, because that's what I washed them down with. Yuck!

least fav. fruit: bananas. to me, fruit should be juicy and refreshing. Bananas are too heavy and "creamy."
Reply:My favourite fruit would be a very firm bananas.

My favourite vege would be leeks.

Can't offer a reason, they just are my favourites.

Least favourites would poor quality foods that are not fresh.

Don't think I can point the finger at either Vege or Fruit I don't like
Reply:I love zuchini, brocoli, green beans, corn, spinach, they just taste good to me, and for fruits I love strawberries, oranges, grapes, watermelon, canteloupe. I can't stand brussel sprouts, cabbage, artichokes and asparagus
Reply:Favorites:

Fruit- Bananas, Watermelon, Strawberries, Pineapple

Vegetable- Broccoli, Green Beans

Dislike:

Fruit- Pears

Vegetable- Celery

I also like Avocados, but I'm not sure if it is a fruit or a vegetable :)
Reply:I love all fruits and veg, but my favorite fruit would have to be carambolo (star fruit) and fresh pineapple, favorite veg is kolrabi or sunchokes-love that raw crunch!
Reply:i like kiwi because it has a pretty color inside.
Reply:favorite,grapefruit,cantaloupe,bananas,a... peaches

favoritevegetable-celery,topmato,lettu...

least favorite vegetable-onions and an type of pepper

least favorite fruit plums
Reply:I LOVE:

apples,oranges,pineapple...my absolute favorite!!!

broccoli, asparagus, tomato, spinach, pickles, cucumber

But I hate:

cauliflower, pears, brussel sprouts, any form of squash, avocado

;)
Reply:Fave fruit: oranges, cherries, bananas, watermelon (all are very refreshing and filling to me)

Least fave fruit: cantelope (has a starchy taste to me)

Fave veggies: potato, cabbage, corn, sweet potato, turnip greens (all can be cooked in so many different delicious ways)

Least fave veggies: okra (too "blah" and hasn't any flavor to me"

Is canned fruit okay to eat if I can't eat most fresh fruits?

Hello. I have had a problem eating fresh fruit for quite a while now and am limited to strawberries, grapes, and bananas. Anytime I eat any other type of fresh fruit my mouth and throat will start burning and won't stop until many hours later. Does anyone know what could be going on? Ironically though I can eat any fruits if they are canned so would it be better if I buy the canned variety and rinse it with water than to not eat any fruit at all?

Is canned fruit okay to eat if I can't eat most fresh fruits?
You probably have an allergy to some emzime in the fresh fruit. Canning kills most of these enzimes. Canned fruit still has most of the fiber and nutrients of fresh fruit. The best canned fruit to buy is "in fruit juice" or "light syrup". Don't get fruit in "heavy syrup". Any fruit is better than no fruit at all.
Reply:Have you spoken with your doctor about possibly being allergic to the other fruits?
Reply:could be allergic, or it could be that other fruits contain more acid (citric), or possibly that they're causing acid reflux. Most likely you are allergic, and I doubt changing the way the fruit is cooked would help. Ask your Dr. for an allergy test, and what he/she recommends.
Reply:yes also frozen fruit is good all you do is defrost and microwave or add to favorite meals thats it
Reply:I can some what identify with you

and

YES

The simple processing (even in water) will eliminate the irritants.

I THINK it has to do with sex products in plants LIKE pollens
Reply:I've been told that the best fruits are: 1. Fresh 2. Frozen 3. canned.

Canned products contain a lot of sodium and not everyone wants that. Rinsing first does help a little.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.
Reply:Canned , frozen %26amp; dried fruit has very near the same amount of nutrients as fresh. Perhaps it is the acid in the fresh fruits that cause your symptoms. The water or syrup in the canned fruit would leach out some of the fruit acid, so rinsing them is a good idea. I'm not sure about frozen fruit; most is flash frozen so there may be just as much acid as fresh, and the same for dried. If you cook the fresh/ frozen/dried fruit, then rinse, it may relieve your symptoms as well.
Reply:i have a friend whos allergic to fruit but she can eat fruit if its canned, frozen cooked or whatever. she just cant eat raw fruit.

Is drinking fruit juice the equivelant of eating fruit?

Is drinking a glass or two of apple juice the same as eating two apples or something? My mom tells me to eat fruit, but I drink fruit juice instead. Is fruit juice just as good as fruit?

Is drinking fruit juice the equivelant of eating fruit?
No. But "Naked Juice" makes some pretty good smoothies. They contain 100% real fruit and not just concentrates. The percentages are found above the nutrition labels. Aim for those that are 100%....................................... there's nothing that can replace the fruit itself.
Reply:It depends on the juice. Apple juice is basically sugar. Apple cider is closer to drinking an apple, but is only available locally and for a limited time (it generally isn't pasteurized and has to be very fresh).

Most juices have too much sugar and not enough fiber in them. Getting one of those juicer things would help, but basically you should just eat the silly apple. They taste good.
Reply:depends on the type and brand of juice. Some fruit juices are full of sugar and stupid stuff like that. There are some 100% juices out there but you have to look and they will tell you how much of it is a serving of fruit.
Reply:depends on what juice. try like v8 splash or other all natural fruit juices. avoid the juices with alot of added sugars. the grat tasting juices are not usually equivelent to a piece of fruit, but v8 splash is.
Reply:No. Not even close. The most health beneficial part of the fruit, the antioxidants and phytonutrients in fruits break down within 4 hours upon exposure to oxygen and light. That's not all, we lose 50% within those 4 hours. Eat fresh fruit... it's what nature intended.

You might as well drink sugar water than fruit juices... both have the same health benefit -- none.
Reply:its not equivalent.. but yes it is still better than nuthing or even water or beer!!! if u eat fruits u can get all the benefits of tht fruit,, should eat the skin also... plus u get the fibre n chewing makes ur gums n teeth stronger.. so definitely eating is better than the juice...
Reply:Actually it isn't really. The actual apple contains carbohydrates called "complex carbs" these complex carbs are good for you because they supply a good source of energy. Some other complex carbs are: wheat, whole grains, bread etc. The juice of the apple is comprised of "simple carbs." An example of a simple carb is sugar. Sugar gives you a quick high and then a low. So in fact, eating an apple is actually healthier than just drinking apple juice because apple juice only contains the simple carbs and not the complex carbs. It's the difference between eating bread, and just eating sugar.
Reply:no
Reply:it depends what fruit juice fruit is healtheir but some fruit juices contain natural sugar in them like apple juice .I would say that one is ok but lots is bad lots of juices have a lot of sugar in them and some shops say sugar free but they sometimes are lieing.
Reply:You're mom is correct. It's better to eat fresh fruit.

Fruit juice tends to be higher in sugar especially apple juice.

Also eating fresh fruits will give your body more nutrients than the juice
Reply:Eating fruits is better. Juices removes the fibres while eating the real thing gives you the whole goodness, fibre and everything in.
Reply:NO on drinking the juice

MOM is right eating the fruit is best
Reply:It is actually healthier to eat fresh fruit than to drink fruit juice, because fruit juice has alot of sugar in it. Even the fruit juices that say 100% fruit juice, they still have alot of sugar. If you can't eat fresh fruit, then a 1/2 cup of fruit juice is equal to one piece of fresh fruit. The most fruit juice that people should drink in one day is one cup because it has alot of sugar in it,and too much sugar isn't good for your body.
Reply:the juice has a lot of sugar added
Reply:wow good question lol

How much fruit do you each on the average day?

Here is some interesting "fruit" information I just found on another website...

1000 calories of fruit is about:

A big bowl of cherries (about 50 cherries): 250 calories

1 pint of strawberries (100 calories)

15 apricots (250 calories)

3 mangoes (400 calories)

(That fruit, by the way, will provide 750% of your vitamin C, 385% of your vitamin A, 125% of your vitamin E, 110% of your vitamin B-6, as well as good amounts of magnesium (42%), phosphorus (42%), iron (65%), calcium (23%), thiamin (63%), riboflavin (77%), niacin (55%), and folate (55%))

1000 calories of fruit is about:

4 bananas (435 calories)

3 large oranges (250 calories)

2 pomegranates (200 calories)

1 large apple (125 calories)

(That fruit will provide 612.48% of your vitamin C, 268.04% of your vitamin B-6, as well as a good amount of vitamin E (49.72%), folate (70%), niacin (30%), iron (33%), and calcium (27%), phosphorus (30%), and magnesium (52%))

How much fruit do you each on the average day?
I try to eat fresh fruit five times a day for breakfast lunch and dinner and for my morning, afternoon, and evening snack.
Reply:One piece of fruit per day. I like fruit , just forget to eat it. Trying to eat more.

What kind of fruit is growing on my tree?

I have multiple citrus fruit trees in my yard in Sarasota, FL. Most of the fruit isn't very tasty and so I really don't care what they are. However, there is one tree that the fruit is so yummy and I just don't know what it is.

The fruit is small and round and the peel is orange. It looks like an orange and probably is some kind of orange. The fruit on the inside is similar to that of a ruby red grapefruit in color. However it doesn't taste at all like grapefruit. It is much sweeter, even more so than a ruby red. Also, it is much smaller than a grapefruit and not even as big as a very large orange. It is very juicy and a pain in the neck to peel. Some citrus peels easily - these do not. Also, there is a peculiar (and convenient) absence of seeds.

Does anyone know what this is? Here's an overview:

-baseball sized fruit

-orange peel

-reddish flesh

-very juicy

-exceptionally sweet, hardly any acidic flavor at all

-no seeds

-difficult to peel

-not grapefruit/orange (possible hybrid?)

What kind of fruit is growing on my tree?
ITS A BLOOD ORANGE! they have it at my hairsalon alot ( im a 13 yr old boy, my parents make me go) but it it exactly as your description. The lady that ate one said it was very good and tasty, and when i looked at it it was a dark reddish orange color. It was sooo hard to peel she used a knife cuz she didnt wanna break a nail.
Reply:maybe tangelo.hybrid mix of of orange and tangerine
Reply:blood orange.

The blood orange is a variety of orange (Citrus sinensis) with crimson, blood-colored flesh. The fruit is smaller than an average orange; its skin is usually pitted, but can be smooth. The juice is sweet but somewhat bitter and less acidic than that of regular table oranges.[1] The distinctive dark flesh color is due to the presence of anthocyanin, a pigment common to many flowers and fruit, but uncommon in citrus fruits. Sometimes there is dark coloring on the exterior of the rind as well, depending on the variety of blood orange. The degree of coloration depends on light, temperature and variety.[2]

The blood orange is a hybrid of ancient origin, possibly between the pomelo and the tangerine. It probably originated in Sicily.[1]
Reply:Maybe a Rosey Red Orange?

What Is That Brown "Fruit" in the Fruit of the Looms logo?

Everybody has seen the commercials for Fruit of the Looms. They involved people dress like fruits that match their logo. The logo consist of both green/purple grapes and an apple. The question is what is that brown fruit if you can call it a fruit because every time I see those commercials it looks like a tobacco but tobacco isn't a fruit, so please tell me what the hell is that final fruit for that logo. Thanks!!!

Isn't it fig?!

Is canned fruit bad for you?

my mother made this delicious fruit salad, but it's made with canned mixed fruit, ( sure you can also make it with fresh fruit, but it goes bad faster and who has time to finely dice all the fruit now days) I'm not sure what it was canned it but the fruit is really juicy. I know it isn't cheesecake bad but is there any nutritional value at all?

Is canned fruit bad for you?
Yes, it is true fresh fruit is better, but canned fruit is a good alternative when fresh is not available. The only real problem with it is the high sugar content when it is packaged in heavy syrup, but canned fruit is better than none at all.
Reply:canned product is full of perservatives and sugar is no good for u u shpuld stick to natural fruits ther no nutritional value in canned at all
Reply:Canned fruit is good for you, as long as you buy the kind packed in fruit juice, not heavy syrup. Yes, there is nutritional value in it.
Reply:No, it's just made out to be.
Reply:it's not bad for you unless the can says sugar is a key ingredient or that its expired...
Reply:Sort of, becoz canned fruits contain more sugar than fresh fruits as they are submerged in a can of sweet syrup to perserve them longer. (thats why they are really juicy!)

Eating too much sugar is fattening and isn't good for health, but eating canned fruits once in a while wouldn't hurt much. If you want to know whether there is any nutritional value in canned fruits then look for the nutrition info on the can label.

All in all, it is advised that you should eat more fresh fruits as they are a natural and healthier alternative than canned fruits.
Reply:Yes, I believe there is still nutritional value even tho it is canned.
Reply:canned fruit can be bad if it is badly canned
Reply:If you look Specifically you will see that the can of fruit might contain Preservatives,Artificial colour etc........That you know is bad for you. But because if you can't afford to buy fresh fruit(Don't worry I'm not saying your poor....The fruit these days are very expensive!)You will have to buy can fruit anyway.........but these caned fruit have added more sugar ...........etc than you think. So you should tell your mother to buy fresh fruit instead of canned. But even if it goes off quick you should instead keep it in the fridge it keeps the food on for longer!!

Good Luck!! And you should be grateful that you have such a lovely mother that makes you so yummy stuff. Thank God for it(If you are religious)
Reply:No Canned fruit is not bad for you/ If they were don't you think the company would be sued by now? and if you want to be sure you should read the labels and the ingredients. And if there is a bubble thing inside of the can (a bulge) then don't buy it! Its contaminated with something.
Reply:It is not bad for you in the sense that it will make you sick. Also it has some nutritional value but not as much as fresh fruit.

However like any canned food it is filled with sugar, salt, cyclemates, and many preservatives that are filled with all kinds of bad chemicals. They will not kill you but over the long haul they will increase your chances of high blood pressure and weight gain etc.

Try to control their consumption. If you decide to "pig out" occasionally, you can always run around the block a few times to counter this.
Reply:While a lot of canned fruit is packed in sugar syrup, making it very high in calories, many are also available without any added sugar. They're located right near the sugar syrup packed kind at the grocers and are better health-wise.
Reply:canned fruit has a much higher sugar content than fresh.it has less nutrients,as they will be lost during the canning process.but canned fruit is still fruit, and better than not eating fruit at all.
Reply:Only if ya let 'em out

There's a wild fruit called "Holly Azara". I want to know more about this fruit.?

Hello.

The first time I started to taste this fruit, I liked it very much. It taste like a mango and a pineapple and apricot all mixed. The skin of the this fruit peels off like a plum, and the size of the fruit is about the same with the fig. I wanted to know if anyone know more about this fruit. If it's fattening, or any kind of symtom that can occur by eating this fruit. I was told that it is edible to human, but just want to make sure before I eat more of them. Very curious about this fruit.

There's a wild fruit called "Holly Azara". I want to know more about this fruit.?
It's a Kei Apple

Fruits are often sprinkled with sugar and eaten fresh. They can also be used in a variety of desserts.

Azara is a genus of ten species of flowering plants in the family Salicaceae, native to temperate to subtropical regions of South America. Azara was formerly classed in the family Flacourtiaceae.

They are evergreen shrubs and small trees growing to 1-8 m tall. The leaves are alternate, or in some species they appear paired, are simple 1-9 cm long and 0.5-5 cm broad. The opposite-leaved appearance of some species is unusual in that one stipule is enlarged giving the apparence of opposite ["paired"] leaves. The flowers are small, yellow or greenish, strongly fragrant, with a 4-5-lobed calyx and no petals but conspicuous long, often brightly colored, stamens; flowering is in spring. The fruit is a red to black berry 3-10 mm diameter.
Reply:just google those words and read all the sites!!
Reply:This is a very good fruit! it tastes wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!

I have fruit flys all over my house. I have no fruit in my house though, i'm 100% sure there fruit flys too.

I have fruit flys all over my house. I have no fruit in my house though, i'm 100% sure there fruit flys too. Whats a good way to get rid of them?

I have fruit flys all over my house. I have no fruit in my house though, i'm 100% sure there fruit flys too.
Bag your trash daily and put it out. If you do not have kids or pets, get a gallon of white vinagaer and open it. Leave it opened on the floor where it will not get knocked over. Check your kitchen not just for fruit but also for garlic, potatoes and onions. Get rid of any bad ones. And put some bleach down your kitchen drain (w/ some water) and flush it down the drain.

I don't know why, but we had that problem too about a month ago. The flies were even in a bathroom that is far from the kitchen.

The problem went away after I did as I listed above.

Lots of luck!
Reply:I find creating a makeshift fruit fly trap gets rid of a lot of them. What you do is fill a jar about 1/5 of the way with vinegar/sugar or some sort of salad dressing. This will attract the fruit flies. Then make a cone out of paper, and stick it tapered end down into the jar. This will make it so that the flies get in but they can't get out. leave it there for a few days until it fills up with flies then dump it somewhere outside. Repeat as necessary.

You'll also want to make sure you're not leaving any invitations for fruit flies. Take out your garbage often, don't leave food lying around, etc.
Reply:There are these things you can buy at stores like Walmart, etc, which attrack fruit flies, and kill them.

It's basically a little rolled up sticky sheet, that's not too big, and you just hang it (in your kitchen or wherever necessary). It attracks the fruit flies with some smell (but you cant smell it very much , don't worry) and they get stuck to it.

They work REALLY well!

Then you just throw it in the garbage after a while, and put up a new one.
Reply:My 4th grade teacher showed me a way to catch them a loooong time ago. You take an empty pickle jar (any jar should work). Then put a couple pieces of fruit in the jar. Next, take a piece of regular paper and roll it up so that it looks like a cone. Make the cone have a very small hole that only a gnat could fit through. Stick the small end of the cone down in the jar ( you may have to make the cone wider or smaller on the big end depending on how deep the jar is). tape around the cone and the jar so that nothing can get out around the edges. The gnats should be able to smell the fruit and crawl down into the jar. The hole is so small that when they try to get out they cant find the hole from the inside. It has worked pretty good for me. I always thought it was cool.
Reply:Wipe all (safe) surfaces down with bleach. You can water the bleach down a bit but this is the easiest and most effective way to get rid of them. Dont miss any countertops and make sure to do this all over your kitchen. Good luck.

Question About Fruit?

What, in dietary terms, would happen if instead of eating dinner, you just engorged yourself with fruit? Like, besides getting sick to your stomach- can you overeat fruit? Or would it be a healthier alternative to eat like six apples, than, let's say, frozen pizza?

Because we just bought a whole bunch of fruit, and I was out all day, and by the time I got home I was starving- so I wolfed down like 3 apples and 3 oranges because that's all I could find to eat.

Now I'm stuffed, so I need to know- is fruit one of those foods you eat whenever and not really worry about it- or are there restrictions to how much you can have?

Does fruit really have any substance to it anyway?

Question About Fruit?
Fruit has lots of sugar and could give you the runs if you eat too much
Reply:Of course fruit has substance. Otherwise, I wouldn't eat it. Six whole fruits, even fresh (I prefer frozen) are much better than six pieces of pizza.

Yes, it does have sugar in it, but I would rather have that sugar than, say, something with high fructose corn syrup, or even corn syrup.

Fruit is generally, whole, real and natural and generally delicious. That's why I eat it. (I'm eating frozen strawberries as I type.)

What is the difference in eating fruit and having fruit juice?

I am 5.5" 27 years and weight 159.I gained 9 pounds last month as i was pregnant but i miscarried,Now i want to lose at least 20lb in one month. In one week i lost 3lb.I am dieting as well as excercising. But everywhere they say eat fruit and i dont like to eat fruits except banana.I substitute it with fruit juice.

What i want to know that what is difference between eating a fruit or having fruit juice instead in weight loss process?Does eating a whole fruit burns more calorie than fruit juice.

What is the difference in eating fruit and having fruit juice?
Even natural fruit juice can give you a hypoglycemic reaction... even if it does not have added stuff.

Try to space out you fruit in general... the higher gi means faster fule and faster burn off... bad news.

If you don't like fruit, don't sweat it for the next month... but try to work them into your diet slowly... they are important. Lay off the juice- it really doesn't benifit you in your quest for a slimmer you.
Reply:whole fruit has fiber in it which digests slower and keep you satified longer. If you prefer fruit juice then make sure you drink 100% fruit juice with no additives and do not take in more than 16oz a day. the calories and natural sugars can really add up.
Reply:Eating the fruit provides not only fiber but other nutrients not found in the fruit juice. The sugar added to fruit juice is very high. Also it takes 20 apples to squeeze 4 ounces of juice. Yet when you drink 4 ounces you're getting all the calories without the fiber your body needs.

You will not feel full by drinking 4 ounces of juice even though it is the equivalent of 20 applies.

But when you eat one or two apples your stomach feels full and you don't eat so much. If you don't eat so much, you don't gain weight so much so it's the domino effect.

If you want to loose weight, you want to cut your calories. You can't cut calories with fruit juice you do the opposite. You INCREASE the number of calories you're taking in.
Reply:Lets put it straight. Losing weight is not that hard, You will never hear me say that it is. All it takes is dedication, motivation and hard work%26lt;!--There are some fairly simple changes that will greatly improve your chances of weight loss success. Check this out to loss weight,

http://weightlosspro.awardspace.com/

The best, most effective way to lose weight and keep it off is to simply eat right and exercise. Good diet, minimize saturated fat, use monounsaturated fat--%26gt;Always check in gradients of everything you are buyingRelaxation, stress and strain never allow people to be slim.
Reply:First off, sorry to hear about the miscarriage.

The actual fruit has fiber in it, which is good for you and juice does not. Depending on the juice it could have high fructose corn syrup, which is not good for you.

Plus the fruit can help ward off hunger where as the juice may (probably) not.
Reply:I'm with you on this one Res! I only really like bananas, apples, oranges, melon and pineapple but even then they don't 'do it' for me as a snack and my brain seems to avoid wanting them at all unless in puddings, recipes or...like you...juices.

I don't know how pure fruit juices can be any worse than straight fruit as the pure-varieties don't have anything else added? The only difference may be the fibre as others have said? But for a junk-food-lover like me I think its better I drink juice for my vitamins etc than not have any at all.

Here (uk) it is recommended to have 5 different fruit and veg's a day and a glass of juice is counted as 1. Our govenment wouldn't count it if it was worse than fresh pieces?

Reply:Fruit has fiber and fewer calories. Juice is made of lots of pieces of fruit, is more sugary and has more calories. Go for fruit over juice to lose weight.
Reply:Fiber baby, fiber! Fiber is our friends. Whole fruits are what we have evolved to eat. Bananas are FULL of sugar.
Reply:Fruit juice contains a ton of sugar and sugar, especially for women, is deadly for trying to dissolve fat. Fruits alone have less sugar and eaten with a portion of protein can help to metabolize the protein for good muscle growth.

Trying to lose 20 pounds in one month seems like a lot. Try to focus on the mirror rather than on pounds.

Reply:fruit juice adds preservatives which makes it less healthy
Reply:Sorry to hear about your miscarriage. :(

Actual fruit is better for you than fruit juice, because fruit has only natural sugars, fiber (to make you feel full) and is low calorie, and many fruits are high in antioxidants. Fruit juice, on the other hand, has lots of added sugar, is loaded with additives and bad stuff for your body. Plus, it has a lot more calories than a piece of fruit!

3 pieces of fruit have about the same calories as 1 8oz serving of juice.

Eating fruit or drinking juice does not burn calories.

What would your religions fruit be as a whole? Mt 7:14-20?

Mt 7:14-20 " whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are the ones finding it. Be on the watch for the false prophets that come to you in sheeps covering but inside they are ravenous wolves. By their fruits you will recognize them. Never do people gather grapes from thorns or figs from thistles, do they? Likewise every good tree produces fine fruit, but every rotten tree produces worthless fruit. a good tree cannot bear worthless fruit, neither can a rotten tree produce fine fruit. Every tee not producing fine fruit gets cut down and thrown into the fire. Really, then, by their fruits you will recognize those [men]

What would your religions fruit be as a whole? Mt 7:14-20?
LOVE

Galatians 4:22-23 tells us that Love is the fruit of the Spirit. It goes on to show us the different manifestations of love (joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness... etc.).

If this is not the "fruit" you are bearing than there is a problem. John 15 tells us how to produce this fruit. Abide in Christ. My problem has been that I think I need to produce this fruit by my efforts, so I spend a lot of time trying to look fruitful. I end up looking like an apple tree with oranges duct taped onto my branches. Pretty foolish.

What I've come to realize is that as long as I stay connected to the vine, fruit bearing is effortless, it just happens naturally.

The problem with us is that instead of asking how we can stay connected to the vine we want to know how long we can survive detached from it. That is not love, it's compromise.

If you are a real Christian, just spend time with Jesus and as you do there will be evidence of that relationship in your life.

Blessings!

Is tomato fruit or vegetable?

Hi, I'm from tomato-vegetable country. 95% people believe in it and if you don't believe in tomato-vegetable, they get descriminated and oppressed by the authorities. You are no man until you recognize tomato as vegetable.

But curious situation occured. I was browsing about this site and found a surprising question and answers. He asks if a tomato is fruit or vegetable and they answered FRUIT!! 95% people are for it. I couldn't believe my eyes, to use a term in tomato-fruit country. One answerer said it's fruit because it has seeds. Huh!! SEEDS? Cucumbers and eggplants also have seeds!! How do you explain about it? People in my country must laugh at that! But you all still seem to believe in it. OK. One more evidence: your own supreme court judged tomato to be Vegetable! That's great!!

Question: if there's a war between tomato-vegetable country vs tomato-fruit country, do you still believe in it and fight for it?

Is tomato fruit or vegetable?
According to Wikipedia, a fruit is the ripened ovary + seeds of a plant. The red, bulbous thing that a tomato plant generates fits this description, so it's a fruit, botanically speaking.

However, from a culinary perspective, a tomato is much less sweet than other fruits such as apples and oranges, so they tend to call it a vegetable.
Reply:It is a legume......becaue it doesnt taste like a fruit and its not a vegetable so its obviously a legume...who can argue with that????? COME ON PEOPLE Report It

Reply:It is a fruit because it has seeds, witch means cucumbers and some nuts are also fruits. Report It

Reply:omygoodness!....i am so convinced that tomatoes are fruits!...they're just trying to confuse us,that's all:) Report It

Reply:tomato is a fruit because it has seeds like apples and oranges. eggplant is also a fruit "The eggplant, aubergine or brinjal (Solanum melongena) is a solanaceous bearing a fruit of the same name, commonly used as a vegetable in cooking. It is closely related to the tomato and potato and is native to southern India and Sri Lanka." the cucumber is also a fruit "The cucumber is a creeping vine that roots in the ground and grows up trellises or other supporting frames, wrapping around ribbing with thin, spiraling tendrils. The plant has large leaves that form a canopy over the fruit.

The fruit is roughly cylindrical, elongated, with tapered ends, and may be as large as 60 cm long and 10 cm in diameter. Cucumbers grown to be eaten fresh (called slicers) and those intended for pickling (called picklers) are similar."

everyone that is a part of the supreme court is a dumb ***

and who would make is tomato a fruit or a vegetable to the supreme court?

who were they fighting with?
Reply:Fruit! Yummy!
Reply:who cares. eat meat.
Reply:Sorry, you won't like my answer. Tomato is always thought of as a vegetable, even by myself, but it is technically a fruit. I understand your arguments and feelings about the subject, but I'm afraid it's the truth. I also disagree, if that helps any.
Reply:i don't really know... i always thought it was a vegetable because mum and dad would always use it for cooking. but then someone told me that it was actually a fruit because it has seeds. but then i guess it is a fruit because according to wikipedia it is. but if you look at it in a cooking perspective, it's a vegetable. so really, it's a fruit.
Reply:i think its a fruit...
Reply:Its a fruit. I believe ;)
Reply:technically it is a fruit, based on how the "fruit" is formed etc.....naming the type of fruit is very complex and you get all types of names like drupe, nut....

True fruits are devloped in the ovary in the base of the flower and contains the seeds...so its a fruit even tho its savory and considered a vegetable as a result.....also vegetables tend to use other parts of the plant eg leaves, roots, stem etc which are not fruits( eg lettues, radish, potatoes, carrots etc)

So yes cucumbers, squash, green beans and walnuts are all fruits too!!!
Reply:It is definitely a fruit, according to Wikipedia. It is an ovary, which classifies it as a fruit.

Can a child eat too much fruit?

I know I am really lucky that my kids eat fruit and veg but my 2 year old daughter eats so much fruit. For example she has just eaten 3 satsumas, an apple and a banana all in the space of half an hour. She is not spoilt and if I say no then she accepts she is not having any fruit but I really want to know if its okay to eat so much fruit or if I should cut it back. An example of her daily diet is an apple and banana for breakfast or weetabix followed by the fruit, cheese sandwich on brown bread with cucumber and tomato on the side for lunch, fruit again during the afternoon then maybe pasta or meat and veg for tea followed by strawberries and grapes. For supper usually another apple and banana. My friends say she eats too much fruit but I would like other opinons prehaps from professionals who work in the health area to put my mind to rest. I made mst of my own baby food when she was little from fruit and veg and her bowel movements have always been loose! Advice would be great!

Can a child eat too much fruit?
5-8 servings of fruits and vegs is good for the body, not bad at all!
Reply:well maybe she has a fast metabolism
Reply:remember this line, "too much fruit, is too much healthy"
Reply:Yes, you can eat too much fruit!

Looks like your daughter needs to be eating more protein and dairy. She should have a protein source at every meal.

The extreme amounts of fruit are directly contributing to the loose stool.

Your daughter is not getting the nutrients she needs to grow properly. Her bones and health are at risk.

Try adding some peanut butter to the apples, at least that's a source of fat and protein (yes, she needs fat!). Talk to a nutritionist for other ideas, but definitely change your daughter's diet now.

Would an all fruit diet work?

Well let me be honest, I cant diet. Well I can only when im in love and at the moment im not. im not way over weight i just wanna lose like 10-15 pounds. Im also alot like the normal person in that I try to go on diets of things I know are good for you but I dont prefer to eat them but it hit me not to long ago. I love fruit. I cant think of any fruit I dont like at all and I know fruit is good for you. Im not quite sure how good for you though. I know its good for you but im not sure if its good enough for a person to make it the only thing you eat for a while. So my questions are would an all fruit diet work? If so what kind of fruits would be the best? and how long will it take to get some results? say just like 10-15 pounds or should i just eat normally but eat fruit just daily

Would an all fruit diet work?
you have the wrong idea about what diet is - its the way of life, its the way you eat, your eating habits.

fruit diet wont work because they are high in sugar (fructose) which is gona drive your kidneys crazy the same way as alcohol does plus it will be stored in fat reserves (too much sugar) and at the same time you will lack protein and healthy fats from your diet.

to get permanent results you have to make permanent changes in your lifestyle (diet and exercise) because temporary changes will give you temporary results plus slower metabolism.

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.

eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)

5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day

8 glasses of water

have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy

have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle

cardio is the only fat burning exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)

dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.

ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
Reply:all friut is bad. too much sugar but put in properly it is good
Reply:Eat fruit and vegetables daily. If you don't like vegies then try some of the various vegetable powders on the market like Frutein by Nature's Plus or Greens Plus at www.greensplus.com. Mix them in a glass of water and you have your vegetables for the day. Take a look a www.bodyforlife.com for a very doable diet plan.
Reply:The key to losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight is balance. If you eat only fruit, you'll miss out on essential nutrients such as protein and calcium, which could do some damage over time to muscles and bone. Fruit is mostly comprised of water, sugars, and fiber- water makes you bloat, and sugars are converted into fat for storage. Probably not the best method for weight loss. You definitely want to keep eating fruit- but eat other things as well.
Reply:I'm trying to lose weight too and it's sooo hard. My aunt is using a weight loss product and it's really working for her. I'm gonna try it and I recommend you try it too. Check their website at

Reply:no, you would die because you wouldnt get protiens
Reply:NO heck NO ! r u nuts ! Friut has sugar in it ! it has sugar in it that was in it when they grew them !! SO NO IT WOULD NOT WORK!
Reply:no, if you eat nothing but fruits you will lose weight but once you start eating normal then youll just gain all the weight back
Reply:If you eat clean food, that means cut out the fat, and if you have smaller meals maybe four or five a day that are balanced and a piece of fruit in between meals and exersise daily you will feel and look better in a couple months. Remember muscle weighs more than fat and the more muscle you have the more fat you will burn. Do not eat carbs after 6pm and if you have to eat something before you go to bed try some popcorn without butter or salt. Get rid of the candy,ho ho's,ringdings, develdogs and all junk food and

Don't drink sugary soda or sugary drinks and replace them with plenty of water.

Good luck !!

Why does fruit rots?

Well i have a science share project. its about when does fruit rots and i need some resources and information. i need answers to these quesstions.

how do i prevent fruits from rotting? what makes fruit rot? how does bacteria make fruit rots? does it help us when fruit rots?

thx if you answer XD

and the best one gets the "best answer"

Why does fruit rots?
fruit rots because of the action of bacteria and mold n it.

Fruit is alive, it keeps ripening. After the skin is broken, bacteria and mold from the air can start growing on the flesh.

Cooler temperatures keep fruit longer. Washing some fruits and keeping them away from contaminants helps, but there are bacteria and molds and yeasts on the skins too.

Keeping the skins intact helps.

The bacteria eat the fruit and leave a broken down product.

Drying fruit keeps it.

Freezing or canning fruit keeps it.

Wine is produced from grapes and other fruits as yeast work on it.

Rotting is an important process in the decomposition of dead materials

New plants are started from rotting fruit on the ground.
Reply:In addition to fruit ripening by ethylene gas, the now available sugars are able to sustain a community of fungus and/or bacteria. Keeping your fruits in a cool, dry place will decrease the likely hood of pathogenesis. From rotting fruit we have discovered fermentation and elucidated some of the causes of food poisonings.
Reply:Fruit rots as a result of a naturally occuring "ethylene gas" produced by the plant, designed to cause the maturation or ripening of the fruit. Too much of a good thing I guess.

What type of fruit was the forbidden fruit?

In the Book of Genesis, it's written that Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden. It does not say it was an apple. Was it an apple or some other kind of fruit? Judaism teaches that the fruit may have been grapes, figs, wheat, or citrons. Some researchers have said it was a pomegranate. Could the "forbidden fruit" have meant something other than an actual fruit or one that is no longer around today?

What type of fruit was the forbidden fruit?
nobody knows for sure. I think the whole story was a metaphor, because if there was a real tree of knowledge out there, then that would mean there was also a real tree of life (there were two trees---God barred them from the tree of life after they ate from the tree of knowledge) which would mean that there is still potentially a fruit out there that could literally induce immortality. I think that's unlikely.
Reply:Ignore religion. Historical references indicate that it was a pomegranate. Scientific discoveries indicate that Adam %26amp; Eve never existed, so whatever fruit you choose, take it with a grain of salt.
Reply:It is just a symbolic tale, meaning that men would acquire knowledge, lose their innocence because of that, and would be able to distinguish between good and evil.

The kind of "fruit" is irrelevant.

That was the beginning of the concept of "sin".
Reply:As the Bible does not say there is no way to know. In my opinion I think it is likely a type of fruit no longer in existence.
Reply:We are not told what type of fruit it was. In fact, it doesn't matter what species it was, the important thing is that it was forbidden by God for those people to eat it.
Reply:The kind of fruit is not specified. to guess would be adding to what the scriptures give is.

My bad side wants to tel you that it was a Dingleberry!
Reply:Other than any actual fruit-have you ever come across a "fruit of knowledge" at your local store?
Reply:It's whatever you want it to be, dear - just like a hooker's name. That's the beauty of fantasy!

The tradition that it may have been a fig was due to the fact that the fig was traditionally connected with sexuality. (See, e.g., the "Song of Songs" 2:13.) And, of course, in Hebrew, "Knowledge" was a euphemism for sexuality, as when it is said that Adam "knew" his wife Eve. The "Original Sin" was their original sexual awakening - "and they saw that they were naked." Again, they are often depicted covering their "shame" with fig leaves.
Reply:It was actually a virus program.
Reply:The forbidden fruit the world continues to eat is the "false doctrine of a combination of righteousness and evil".
Reply:Is that a gay joke?
Reply:it was a fruit that provided the knowledge of good and evil. what else do u need to know? the bible provides no further answers than the fact that it was a fruit.
Reply:I researched this once.

and it is the QUINCE...
Reply:I heard Adam had a date with Eve... true??

LOL.

Peace be with you.
Reply:Read the passage of this beautiful myth carefully. The answer is there: knowledge of good and evil -- that is the fruit. It is a metaphor for understanding life. The consequences of knowledge are responsibility and the pain of knowing, i.e., the story is a metaphor for humanity's growth into adolescence, its loss of its infantile, animal-like innocence and ignorance of itself and its reality.
Reply:A banana.
Reply:I have heard that it was a hallucinogen. The forbidden fruit is what God told man not to eat of. So when you disobey God you learn that this is evil. The act itself is evil. Called rebellion.

Also, the Pastor recently preached that this tree was a type of tithe. Set apart to not eat of. 1/10 of the total fruit trees.

The sin nature we inherit is to rebel against Gods Word. Showing when we learn to say "No!" to mom.

I would liken this tree to mind altering drugs, hallucinogens, alcohol, etc... It is the dangerous/deadly things we aren't suppose to eat of. Well, the moment Adam %26amp; Eve were denied the 'Tree of life' they died spiritually. Following this within an age, they died physically. The soul went where God put their soul.
Reply:raisin
Reply:There was one Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. We have no indication that there were ever any more of the same variety. The scriptures say that it was the particular fruit of The Tree of Knowledge. Therefore, I do not think it was one of the varieties we commonly know. It is so easy to try to make a metaphor out of the story and make some deep interpretation out of it. I think it is easier to take the story as told at face value.
Reply:Since none of us were actually there then I'd have to say that the possibility exists that the fruit could have been just about any fruit found on earth, but if I had to guess then I'd have to say the fruit on that particular tree isn't found anywhere on this planet of ours or people would still be learning stuff when they ate it. Just like the tree of life would have some other form of fruit on it. Just my opinion though.
Reply:It is likely to be a fig!
Reply:I belive you have answered your own question quite well.
Reply:To the best of my knowledge the tree was the the evil one and its fruit was his spirit which entwined itself into the souls of man . The spirit of sin and lawlessness.

Deuteronomy strictly forbids divination, sorcery, witchcraft, etc....
Reply:Well....according to the bible, I would consider it an "APPLE." For this reason, it contained both knowledge of good and evil; therefore, this forbidden fruit give individuals to think and have free expression without any regards. However, mankind has paid a heavy price because of this very fruit; therefore, it reflects on how we live in this society regarding how we CONFORM!!!!!!
Reply:I think they did 69.
Reply:read further in the bible..it eventually tells you it was an apple
Reply:I don't think the bible is specific, but why does it really matter the point isn't "what kind" of fruit it's about the story of why they shouldn't have taken it.
Reply:The tree may be referring to Adam and Eve IE: the first Family tree. Now before that old serpent called the devil had made it known to Eve that upon taking the seed of man orally she would be wise like unto YHWH. I know it sounds sick doesn't it. that is why it is written so mysteriously.

Everyone would get offended if they read this.

So in other words, it was probably the first oral sex in history.

Which made the man weak thereby succumbing to the wishes of his wife, which that old serpent knew was out of order with the plan of creation.

This seems to be a recurring phenomenon.

Of course this is pure speculation so please don't be offended.
Reply:some think it was an apple others think it could have been a mango
Reply:They ate of the fruit of satan's lie's .Satan know's good but is evil. And yes his evil spirit is here today with lie's .The fruit is something like fruit of the womb.Read Gen.3:15 GOD is talking to the serpent (And I will put enimity between thee and the woman ,and between THY (satan's )seed and her seed (Eve )it shall bruise thy head .(And we will)and thou shall bruise His heel ( JESUUS CHRIST ) And they did on the cross .Gen 3:16 Unto the woman he said ,I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy Conception.Eve had twins Cain and Abel.We know what happened here.Read Matt 13 :24 -40 . Matt. 13:39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil. PEACE TO YOU AND TRUTH Also Gen 3:7 The eye's of them both were open and they knew they were naked they sewed Fig LEAVE'S and made napkin's to cover their mouth 's from eating fruit .And made themselves apron's .What does an apron cover shame at what had been done in the fig grove ..Mark 13:28 Now learn a parable of the fig tree.Let your's eye's be opened.
Reply:It has been interpreted to be the Apple for centuries. A male's "Adams apple" was coined from this. While different religions have different views, this general definition has been used for 100's of years. In the end there is no right or wrong answer, believe whatever your particular Religion dictates.

Pick'n Fruit and Race Cards...?

How come everytime the pro-illegals don't like what is said, they rush to the conclusion that if the illegals are deported, who is going to pick the fruit?

Its always that or the race card...

I was listening to CNN the other day, and they were talking about picking the fruit, etc.. and how a little less than 2% of the illegals are in the fields picking fruit....

Obviouslly someone LEGAL is out there picking fruit besides illegals... So, all those pro-illegals bringing up the "picking fruit" card from now on, can shove it up their booty...

--Rob :)~

Pick'n Fruit and Race Cards...?
They only use BS to defend their stances.
Reply:so what is the question? I honestly dont know any illegal immigrants that pick fruit. There are only grapes around here, and that is not even very close to where I live. Those that I have met work in the food service industry. Like bus-boys and cooks. Also hotel cleaning. Are you sad that they took your job of picking up people's dirty dishes?
Reply:Heck man, they only pick fruit for the first few weeks, if at all, these days ... illegals don't want badly paid backbreaking jobs any more ... no, they're in construction these days ... plenty of moola ... that's why the fruit is rotting in Florida .. plenty of jobs in Florida in construction, trust me ....
Reply:Haha, funny, i have noticed that too, "who's going to pick the oranges" "do you really want to pay $5.00 for a gallon of orange juice?"

hahahaha
Reply:Yep, too true! The damn illegals are costing us a hell of a lot more than any thing we might save on fruit!
Reply:They have no other defense.

As fresh as you can see,

O come and buy three pine-apples

And get one orange free

O come and buy three oranges

And get a plum to taste,

The offers close within an hour

And there are cherries black and red

And berries that are best,

And still more different fruits I say,

All imported from west

A thousand juicy mangoes ripe

I have for you in store,

For dollar one, oh you shall get

Ten pomes; yet more and more!

So take an apple for your Love,

An orange for your child,

A pear for husband big and fat,

Sweet apples, grapes and all:

I pluck, I pluck them all for you

From trees, too short and tall.......

so how is the poem? please give your comments....and take some fruits if you wish...

Fruit for quaker birds?

my daughter has 2 quakers and she has told me to buy them fruit, so i get apples, grapes and corn, they love corn, but what other fruit can they have? any? i dont want to make them sick by feeding them fruit they are not allowed to have. can i buy dried fruit also? thank you.

Fruit for quaker birds?
I give my Quaker some fruits, but vegetables should make up a larger percentage of the diet compared to the fruit intake. Too much fruit can give a bird runny stools and can result in too much sugar intake.

I balance the fruits I serve my Quaker with a good variety of vegetables. I use the frozen mixed veggie mix (peas, corn, carrots, green beans and limas) and then add to it: chopped spinach or mustard greens, apple (no apple seeds), pear, and grapes. I also give my Quaker strawberries, necatarines, cantelope, bell pepper, celery, and squash/zucchini. My Quaker loves this mix and eats it all!!!

Dried fruits are good too... just be careful if you buy them at the grocery store... they may have added preservatives and/or sugars/corn syrup, which is not healthy for a parrot.

One last thing about Quakers ... they are prone to fatty liver disease and need a diet that is rich in greens (peas, kale, spinach, dark leafy lettuces) and should have a very limited amount of high saturated fat nuts (sunflowers). Almonds are much lower in fat, but my Quaker doesn't really like the nuts that much... she will eat a peanut every once in awhile, but mostly she prefers her peas and lima beans! :)

A few foods that can be toxic to birds include apple seeds, avocado, caffeine, chocolate, dairy, beef/meats that may contain salmonella, and foods that have not been rised/washed.

Good luck to you, your daughter, and your quakers!
Reply:Yes, they can definitely have dried fruit as well. My macaws loves dried fruit mixtures, mostly because they contain pumpkin seeds and other stuff like that in it, too.

You can give your bird all types of fruit as long as you don't feed them the pits or seeds of anything. My birds love fruit that they can squeeze juice out of like oranges, all types of berries and so on. Too much fruit can give your bird diarrhea so in moderation is best.

Reply:Owner of Quaker Parakeet, also known as Monk Parrot. My bird loved to eat sliced apples, figs, grapes, etc. But she especially loved corn kernels (canned corn or corn on the cob). What most people do not know is that a Quaker loves meat! Mine loved tuna out of the can, chicken, etc. There was no fruit that I knew of that my Sweetpea didn't like except for maybe pineapple. She loved her bird feed but she dearly loved any fruit that had a good texture. They like something they can work in their beak.

Fruit Fly Problem?

I never really had any problems with fruit flies until last summer, and my family got a ton of them! We don't even let our fruit sit out, we keep most of them in the fridge! Okay, so we've tried the following:

-Poored Bleach down drains

-Kill a fruit fly when we see one

-Put cleaning products in the cornor of rooms to make sure they'll die if they hit that area.

All these work, but only for a short amount of time!

There's another problem: I get most of them in my room, which is weird, since I don't have fruit in there!

So if someone could tell me what causes them, why I get them in my room so much, and how to get rid of them!

Please answer soon, because even though its spring, I've already seen about 20 in my house!

Fruit Fly Problem?
Try putting red wine, or red wine vinegar in a small bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and poke holes in it.

Works in my kitchen all the time (:
Reply:First... how are they getting in?

The, get a fly trap and let it sit out . Fly Baits such as MaxForce Fly Bait and Golden Malrin work well to attract and kill flies

Buy Gentrol and treat the drains and garbage pails. It will kill the fly eggs , too.
Reply:they are very attracted to vinegar and beer/alcohol
Reply:Go to your local hardware store, such as Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. and go to the section with all the weed and bug killers. There might be something there.

If you don't want to use pesticides, here's what my family did when we got the same problem. Search your ENTIRE house for any fruit or vegetable that is ROTTEN. Throw all the rotten produce away and immediately take out the garbage. Since fruit flies are attracted to rotten produce, they should go away soon.

You might want to try searching the internet also.

Another way to solve this problem is too leave as many doors and windows open as you can, and put some fruit outside. The fruit flies should head outside to get to the fruit.

Hope I helped.
Reply:Well I had the same problem and I know what your going through the one and only thing that worked for me was putting my air on and getting it real cold in the house for like 3 days straight and they were gone....
Reply:Go get a 16 oz. water bottle you don't need the cap. Go up to the top of the water bottle right before it tapers. Then there cut around it until you have 2 different pieces one that looks like a funnel and one the kinda looks like a tall jar get a piece of rotten fruit and put it inside the jar part get the funnel part and turn it upside and put it in the jar down it works because fruit flies have poor eye sight so they use walls and surfaces to guide there way so when they feel there way in side they use the the funnel once they get in and eat how ever much they want then they use the sides of the jar piece they won't be able to get out.

Fruit Cocktail Tree .. I have my first fruit , How long did it take yours to grown fruit?

I planted my fruit cocktail tree three springs ago.. Today it is ten foot tall and is growing its first fruit.. I am so excited.. What experience have you had with this tree.. I want another one..

Fruit Cocktail Tree .. I have my first fruit , How long did it take yours to grown fruit?
Um...confession time...I thought you were making this up, and that is was a fake question, so I googled fruit cocktail tree, and....What a cool tree! Is frozen fruit/canned fruit as healthy as fresh fruit?

i drink smoothies all the time as they're quick and easy to make in the mornings before work.. however, i don't always have time to slice up fresh fruit so i buy a lot of canned and fresh fruit, but i was wondering if i lose some nutrients doing this? i always use at least one source of fresh fruit, then a couple of different canned things and something frozen. i'm trying to make sure i do the whole "5 servings of fruits and veg a day" so i want to make sure this is still healthy.

Is frozen fruit/canned fruit as healthy as fresh fruit?
Canned fruit (or canned anything for that matter) has usually processed and some form of sweetener has been added. I like to use frozen fruit, just be sure to check labels to make sure they didn't add any sugar. It's obviously not fresh fruit, but in the off season, it works.
Reply:yes, canned fruit + veg are very healthy because they are canned quickly after picking.

Just make sure the water its canned in is low in sugar or salt(check label), ie the syrup or brine, most are these days
Reply:. Ya, it's a tossup. Canned stuff is Full of sugar, sucrose, but the fruit is probably freasher than what the stuff is on the shelf of the 'Fresh Fruit' section that's maybe 3 weeeks old from picking time on the farm.

IF you can buy it 'Fresh' in the Farmer's Market, 1-2 days old, it's better as long as you wash ALL the fertilizer and bugspray off it.

Fruit Juices, etc.?

If I drink some type of fruit/vegetable juice (suchas V8), will it supply me with the same nutrients as eating vegetables, etc?

I can't manage to get in the recommended amount of servings of fruits and vegetables. If I eat some fruits and vegetables, can I substitute the rest with a healthy fruit/vegetable juice?

Basically, what are the benefits of drinking these drinks?

Fruit Juices, etc.?
yes you can substitute with a healthy fruit/veggie drink. they help people that cant get or don't have time to eat all the servings of fruit/veggies. the best way is to get a juicer and make you own with the daily requimed amont of veggies in on glass and the same of fruit in another, then you don't have to worry about it all day. V8 fusion is the best because it has a full serving of fruit and veggies in one glass and does not taste bad.
Reply:it's still healthy, but i think eating fruits and vegetables is better. and healthier
Reply:You're better to eat the fruit/veggies, because they supply FIBER, which is lost in juicing.

But if you absolutely can't get them all in, then a V8 is a good substitute---and take a multi-vitamin every day, too.
Reply:yes it will help some..but you can also get your servings from spaghetti sauce or you can buy a juicer....those things are awesome!
Reply:Yes:) u are deffinatlly getting

all the nutrients from the V8

I love it too, drink it all tha time:)
Reply:Fruit juices won't supply the same nutrients you need that fruits and vegetables give, although it will give you some of the vitamins, you will be lacking in dietary fiber which is very important for your regularity.

V8 and such juices are pretty overratted because they are very high in salt, more than you need in a day. If you're gonna try substituting juices i recommend that you make a smoothie or drink odwalla smoothies. The Green one i can't remember the name is really good for you because it has spirulina in it, which has like a days worth of vegetable nutrients that you should get in a day. It's really good, it might look gross but it tastes like apples.

Fruit tree pollination, can i plant apple, peach, plum, cherry,&pear in no partic.order without fruit tasting off?

someone answered another question on here, that fruit trees need to be planted a certain way....as to prevent wierd tasting fruits caused by pollinating w/a different type fruit tree.....is that so?

Fruit tree pollination, can i plant apple,peach,plum,cherry,%26amp;pear in no partic.order without fruit tasting off?
The ones you mentioned will not pollinate one another...you're all good. For fruit trees to pollinate one another they have to be more closely related and bloom at the right time. I have heard of quince pollinating pears, and maybe your plum and cherry could be close, but I highly doubt it.

Fruit cake, preparing fruit?

I'm making a dark fruit cake using my late Grandma's recipe, but there's a step I don't understand. The recipe calls to cut and prepare the fruit, which is currants, rainsins, dates, citron and walnuts. I know I have to cut the dates, but how do I prepare them? Shouldn't I soak the fruit except the nuts?

Fruit cake, preparing fruit?
Soak the dried fruits in quarter cup rum(substitute orange juice) for a minimum of 24 hours.Stir in the fruit/ rum mixture and nuts into the batter according to your recipe.
Reply:You shouldn't have to soak the fruit. When I use dried fruits I take a bit of the flour used in the recipe and shake the fruits in it...this keeps them from sinking to the bottom of the cake. The directions probably just mean to cut or chop the fruit and nuts to a semi-uniform size and add according to recipe directions.
Reply:My mom usually puts the fruit in the blender for a few seconds, she doesn't soak them in anything.
Reply:When I make my fruitcake depending on who your making it for and the time your going to soak it, I used apple juice and a liquor of some kind, but it is not a nessessary ingredient, don't soak the nuts, just raisins, currants, glazed fruit, peels and pinea pple or cherries. I do mine in the frig, over night or a period of 2 days, then make the base, applesauce is good to help keep the cake moist, my batter is simple, the fat is best to be vegetable shortening or butter, eggs, AP flour, you can add some whole wheat flour to add nuttiness, spices like cinnimon, Nutmeg or mace and then your nuts (I Like pecans but walnuts or almonds are good too). I find slow cooking is best your Grandmothers recipe might state a temp, but the slower you cook it the moister it will be.

After cooling and removing it from the pan, wrap it twice, once in waxed paper or saran wrap, and then aluminum foil, I also brush mine with a syrup if left in pans to give as gifts, I make a simple sugar syrup, and if you like add a touch of brandy or rum, that is up to you.

When working as a chef I would make fruitcakes, Guinness Plum Pudding, Scottish shortbreads, Black Bun ( a West Indian style cake) and Spitz cookies at Xmas time for the place I was running.

Fruit Crumble - but which fruit?

I have to make a fruit crumble for school. Can anyone suggest an exciting combination of fruits that go together well so I can get the best marks. I really enjoy cooking, but I can't think of what to put in.

The fruits must be in season. (This is the tricky part!)

Thanks in advance.

Fruit Crumble - but which fruit?
Rhubarb and apple.

But i believe this answer may be too late...
Reply:Yeah it was a bit... next time.

I did forest fruits - thanks Honeybee Report It

Reply:buy a bag of frozen berries - fruits of the forest and combine them with some apples
Reply:Strawberries, rhubarb and apples are a nice combo. Also apples and cranberries go good together and are always in season. These days you can buy everything, in or out of season.

Fruit import question?

I know that the US has some strict policies on fruit importing, but i don't know the specifics. Is it only on domestic type fruits, or is it on all fruits. My fiancee is from the Philippines, and she would like to bring some rambutan, but i am worried that it will have to stay in quarantine until it is rotten. Can anybody help me out with this and let me know if exotic fruits like that are quarantined as they come into the States??

Fruit import question?
One of the reasons for fruit and plant quarantines is because of the bugs that lay their eggs on the fruit. When they are brought into an area that doesn't have natural enemies to those bugs, they can totally destroy not only an entire crop in a farmer's field but everywhere in that state and greatly impact the production of that food.

You won't be able to bring in any fruit to any part of California that hasn't gone through normal channels.

Don't try to hide it and bring it in because how would you feel if your one little fruit wiped out the entire crop of say, oranges in Florida? In Washington state, we now have the Apple maggot quarantine and it's been on for years - we just can't get rid of it - someone brought it in.

So, if you don't mind buying fruit in your grocery store with holes in it and worms crawling in it - keep in mind - others DO mind.
Reply:i dont know about that quarantine issue since i didnt go to any country before, im from philippines also. and i want to give my friend their in los angeles some unripe mangoes but i dont know if it will work, about the rambutan why dont you just peel the cover of the fruits and place them in a sealed container maybe you can bring it in you hand carry bag.

Does blending fruits into a smoothie change the sugars into more harmful sugars than in the whole fruit?

I've heard that blending fruits into a smoothie changes the sugars in the fruits so that they actually become harmful, unlike the sugar in whole fruits which are good for you. Can anyone confirm this? I find it much easier to take 3 or 4 different fruits as a smoothie than eat the whole fruit, but want to avoid any harmful sugars.

Does blending fruits into a smoothie change the sugars into more harmful sugars than in the whole fruit?
no.. it will not change the sugar content of the fruits into something else. it's still mostly fructose... some fruits contain glucose (like grapes), but they won't change in the blending process
Reply:it does not create harmful sugars.......
Reply:Simple. natural sugars don't become harmful unless you could chemically process them somehow. Blending doesn't do that.
Reply:This is a good question. Since there shouldn't be any chemical process or fermentation taking place, then the sugar (fructose) should remain the same even after the fruit is blended.

I guess we could address the concept of harmful sugar. When people typically think of sugar as harmful, they are usually referring to sugars with a high glycemic index - sugars like Sucrose, dextrose, maltodextrin, corn syrup, etc. If someone implied that blending fruit raises their glycemic index (making it more harmful... FYI I like sugars.. All of them and believe in moderation they are fine for me. A diabetic on the other hand may have a different philosophy), they may have been thinking that the fiber in fruit (which helps slow digestion and therefor lowers the glycemic index) was compromised, by the blending process, in a way that would reduce it's efficacy on digestion and absorption of sugars. This could be likened to a manufacturing process to some degree.

I would think if blending the fruit did degrade the natural fibers, the overall net effect would probably be negligible. So smoothie up!!

Is Fruit Unhealthy?

I know that fruit is supposedly good for you, and that the body needs it, but i found that alot of fruit has ALOT of sugar.

Now is it good sugar? and even if it is, isnt it just as bad for you as the processed sugar? because i heard that the body cant tell if the sugar is natural (fruit) or man-made (cookies, etc.)

So is too much fruit unhealthy? and can someone gain weight from the sugar they eat from the fruit?

Is Fruit Unhealthy?
i think that too much of anything can be bad for you. fruit has barely enough sugar to get you fat. there is more sugar in a ceral bar than there is in 5 apples. and since most fruit is a natural laxitive, most likely many people don't eat ALOT of it. and if you were, be sure to balance it out with other things. like vegtables and whole grains. fruit has sugar, but not enough to make you fat. unlike candy and soda, you can have a ton of it each day and just get fat. but with fruit a ton of it will fullfill your dietary needs, or too much will have you throwing up or running to the bathroom depending on the weaness or strongness of your digestive system. but everything in moderation is my advice. don't go on a all fruit diet or anything eat what you want. but in small amounts.
Reply:Antioxidants, Vitamins, Fiber = Good

Sugar = Bad

Solution -%26gt; eat two small pieces (or 1/2 of one large piece) of fruit everyday.
Reply:The sugar that comes from fruit is called fructose. It's not bad for you, so don't worry.
Reply:fruit has a lot of its natural sugars..there is nothing bad from these types of sugars and fruit can't really make you fat since they don't have a lot of calories..an apple i think has like 70 or something...and fruits have a LOT of vitamins that are needed in the body..so..eat all the fruit that you want
Reply:No fruit is not unhealthy because on top of the good sugar it has vitamins and nutrients that help ur body. Processed sugar (ie cookies, candy,etc....) is bad for you because it has preservatives like aspartame and phenylnol which cause cancer. If you eat a lot of fruit it is very healthy because that means u have a whole lot of Vitamin C, Folic Acid, as well as fiber. The fiber from the fruit helps regulate the digestive process thus getting rid of any toxins that may have been in your body from eating the processed sugars. I hope this helps answering your question
Reply:Eat more fruit and fewer cookies. Cookies don't grow on trees now do they. Cookies are made by people who want you to buy MORE cookies, so they make them as addictive as possible. FAT, SUGAR, SALT, all the things that people crave.
Reply:Eat all the fruits that you want they are healthy
Reply:Your body burns fruit sugar in a more efficient way than bad sugars. Planet earth is covered with water for 70%. The human body consists of 80% of water. So what should humans eat: food that contains 80% water. Fruit is 80% water on average.

The energy fruit contains is in the form of sugars (glucose). Your body can easily turn this glucose into energy by using oxygen. When the body burns the sugars with the help of oxygen there are waste products produced.

The waste products of this chemical reaction are water and carbon-dioxide. Your body can use the water and disposes of the carbon-dioxide through the lungs by breathing.

It is a very quick, clean and easy way to extract energy.

Your body does an excellent job: it extracts 50% of the energy. A combustion engine about 10 to 20%, the rest is lost through heat.

Fruit and Veggies?

I need to lose weight and I was going to eat only Fruit, Veggies and nuts. along with daily exercise and drinking water because, I cannot eat anything too hard because of my teeth. I no longer eat meat. I was going to eat,

Bananas

Apple Sauce

Oranges in a Can

Cooked Carrots

Green Beans

Can anyone else recommend more Fruits and Veggies that I can eat? I know that this is not enough but it's the only thing I can. I can only eat Soft Foods I can eat hard things but not to hard.

Does anyone know a Good Vegetable Soup I can make in the slow cooker?

Will I lose weight?

The fruits that are in a can, are they good for you? The fresh fruit may be to hard for me.

Fruit and Veggies?
yes you would be healthy if you take care of yourself.the good foods you eat the better you could loose weight just one thing stop eating sugar.....that kills the food you eat please listen to me i always drank soda now i am better looking
Reply:This is a TERRIBLE, unbalanced diet. Please do some research to find a good, healthy diet that will allow you to lose weight. There are so many things wrong with what you're doing it's sad. You need protein in your diet and much more variety in fruits and vegetables.
Reply:Broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, strawberries, pineapple, apples, salads, many choices.
Reply:canned fooda are equally good as fresh. u can buy canned vegtables like carrot , beets, peas e.t.c. whatever u like. put them in apot. add some water. shred some fresh ginger and bay leaves. add some cilantro and salt. u r done.
Reply:be careful, believe it or not you can overdose on water it dilutes the salt in your body if you are going to drink a lot of water then you need to eat salty foods. Also if you drink too much water you can gain water weight. If you are going to be exercising I suggest if you go to a gym get a personal trainer, he or she can give you an excerise plan and also a meal plan (one that doesnt eliminate everything but fruits and water). Good luck!!!
Reply:if you cant eat meat then please take cratine and whey protein powder with milk.
Reply:I'd add some tofu which you can marinate in salt water for easily added flavor.

Brussel sprouts are really nice.

My mom used to make a veggie soup in the slow cooker: canned green beans, corn, diced tomatoes, black beans and a package of taco spice.
Reply:Please research anything that is recommended before you add it to your diet. Creatine is typically for those who want to pump up their muscles artificially. The USDA provides a fabulous website for diet and nutrition.
Reply:Try not to eat fruit out of a can as they will have lots of sugar and other preservatives on them that may stop you losing those extra pounds. Try eating tangerines, apples, strawberries, rasberries and grapes! You can also eat mango, plums, melon and many other fruits. Many fruits are soft and juicy, it's only apples and pears that may be a bit hard to chew! Hope this helps! Good luck!:)
Reply:More veggies than fruit, some protein (low fat) low carbs

eat portions the size of your fist.
Reply:Can you add complex carbs to your meal plan ? They aid in speeding your metabolism up (they are really important)

Some other suggestions would be : pumkin (boil it with splenda),

any kind of squash (zucchini). avocado, you can try beans they add a lot of protein to your diet to make them soft, just boil them for an extra hour on low heat (they can become softer than carrots).

This is just a basic soup mix with fresh veggies added to it. It makes it healthier and more appealing to the eye.

Ingredients

1 package cream of broccoli soup mix

3 cups of water

1 cup of 1% milk

1 small onion or 1/4 cup finely chopped

3/4 cup chopped broccoli

1/2 cup chopped cauliflower

1 large carrot or 3/4 cup chopped

Directions

Mix soup mix, water, and milk in a medium sauce pan.

While soup mix is heating at medium to high heat, stir often, and chop your veggies.

Add veggies to the mix.

When the soup starts to boil, turn heat down to a simmer, cover, and stir occasionally for 5 minutes.

Each serving is 1 cup each.

Number of Servings: 5

AS for fruit, you can make fruit smoothies and add the nuts to them so it can be easier on your teeth. You can also make fruit sauces let's say blue berries: you just cook them till they're soft and add sugar (or sugar substitude).

Canned fruits are good for you and yes, soft but try not to get all your fruits from there and try to find them with low sodiuma nd low syrup. You can also boil almost all your fruit (like peaches), or boil a combination of fruit and make it into fruit punch.

Hope this helps.
Reply:Bananas contain about 100 calories each. Applesauce is full of sugar so are the oranges in a can.

Try steaming your veggies. Green leafy vegis are a must.

As for fruit. Eat it natural and in moderation. Here are some suggestions for you.
