Is tomato fruit or vegetable?

Hi, I'm from tomato-vegetable country. 95% people believe in it and if you don't believe in tomato-vegetable, they get descriminated and oppressed by the authorities. You are no man until you recognize tomato as vegetable.

But curious situation occured. I was browsing about this site and found a surprising question and answers. He asks if a tomato is fruit or vegetable and they answered FRUIT!! 95% people are for it. I couldn't believe my eyes, to use a term in tomato-fruit country. One answerer said it's fruit because it has seeds. Huh!! SEEDS? Cucumbers and eggplants also have seeds!! How do you explain about it? People in my country must laugh at that! But you all still seem to believe in it. OK. One more evidence: your own supreme court judged tomato to be Vegetable! That's great!!

Question: if there's a war between tomato-vegetable country vs tomato-fruit country, do you still believe in it and fight for it?

Is tomato fruit or vegetable?
According to Wikipedia, a fruit is the ripened ovary + seeds of a plant. The red, bulbous thing that a tomato plant generates fits this description, so it's a fruit, botanically speaking.

However, from a culinary perspective, a tomato is much less sweet than other fruits such as apples and oranges, so they tend to call it a vegetable.
Reply:It is a legume......becaue it doesnt taste like a fruit and its not a vegetable so its obviously a legume...who can argue with that????? COME ON PEOPLE Report It

Reply:It is a fruit because it has seeds, witch means cucumbers and some nuts are also fruits. Report It

Reply:tomato is a fruit because it has seeds like apples and oranges. eggplant is also a fruit "The eggplant, aubergine or brinjal (Solanum melongena) is a solanaceous bearing a fruit of the same name, commonly used as a vegetable in cooking. It is closely related to the tomato and potato and is native to southern India and Sri Lanka." the cucumber is also a fruit "The cucumber is a creeping vine that roots in the ground and grows up trellises or other supporting frames, wrapping around ribbing with thin, spiraling tendrils. The plant has large leaves that form a canopy over the fruit.

The fruit is roughly cylindrical, elongated, with tapered ends, and may be as large as 60 cm long and 10 cm in diameter. Cucumbers grown to be eaten fresh (called slicers) and those intended for pickling (called picklers) are similar."

Reply:Fruit! Yummy!
Reply:who cares. eat meat.
Reply:Sorry, you won't like my answer. Tomato is always thought of as a vegetable, even by myself, but it is technically a fruit. I understand your arguments and feelings about the subject, but I'm afraid it's the truth. I also disagree, if that helps any.
Reply:i don't really know... i always thought it was a vegetable because mum and dad would always use it for cooking. but then someone told me that it was actually a fruit because it has seeds. but then i guess it is a fruit because according to wikipedia it is. but if you look at it in a cooking perspective, it's a vegetable. so really, it's a fruit.
Reply:i think its a fruit...
Reply:Its a fruit. I believe ;)
Reply:technically it is a fruit, based on how the "fruit" is formed etc.....naming the type of fruit is very complex and you get all types of names like drupe, nut....

True fruits are devloped in the ovary in the base of the flower and contains the seeds...so its a fruit even tho its savory and considered a vegetable as a result.....also vegetables tend to use other parts of the plant eg leaves, roots, stem etc which are not fruits( eg lettues, radish, potatoes, carrots etc)

So yes cucumbers, squash, green beans and walnuts are all fruits too!!!
Reply:It is definitely a fruit, according to Wikipedia. It is an ovary, which classifies it as a fruit.
