Can fruit be bad?

I was wondering if there was any disadvantage to eating fruit in a diet. Since i started putting all junk food in the trash a few years back, i've substuted it with fruit, lots of it. On any given day, i might have something like 5 apples in addition to my 3 main meals. I'm told that fruit is high in sugar, and sugar can make your body hold in lots of fat. But im also told that the sugar found in fruit doesn't do this. After i lost a whole bunch of weight awhile back, i cut back on the excercise and i've stoped loosing weight. I still excercise a fair ammount and I'm wondering if the fruit intake is stalling me. I'm 190, 6'2'' and i'd like to drop to 175-180.

Can fruit be bad?
You're supposed to eat 5 servings of fruit a day anyway. The sugars in fruits break down more efficiently than the ones in complex carbs, so you won't last as long, but fruits are very calorie-sparse. For example, an apple has about the same number of calories as one Oreo, but guess which one will fill you up longer and provide you with more vitamins? My take with fruit is, you can pretty much eat all you want, since they will make you full and suppress your appetite with a fairly low # of calories.

Your plateau is most likely due not to fruit but your body in general. First, you've tapered off the exercise. Second, are you doing routine workouts? Your body adapts to workouts over time and become more efficient, i.e. it takes fewer calories to do the same exercise. Evolutionarily, this is great, as way back when, there wasn't enough food to go around. Nowadays, it does not make sense. To work around this, mix up your workouts. For weights, use different exercises, such as doing bench press one day and maybe dumbbell press the next time you have a chest workout. For cardio, maybe run one day, then bike the next (or do what triathletes do: bike for half the usual distance, then get off and run half your run distance. The transition is a KILLER and guaranteed to confuse the heck out of your muscles).

Good luck. And keep eating fruits! Fruits are never bad for you unless you eat an entire orchard or something.
Reply:Actually, the sugar in fruit is complex sugar and does not have the negative drawbacks that white sugar has. Also, each apple only has about 60-80 calories in it (depending on size). Fruit is extremely nutrient dense along with all raw vegetables. I recommend looking at the other carbs in your diet. If you eat a lot of processed pastas or white breads, cut back on those and you should notice a difference. Try replacing over-processed carbs with whole wheat and whole grain. The reason for this is because the processed carbs behave as sugar in your system, where as complex carbs help to stabilize your blood sugar.
Reply:Everything in moderation. But fruit's not that bad. It does have a lot of sugar in it, but *natural* sugar. Processed sugars are the real devil. It's not all about calories. Think of it this way: an apple has about 55 calories, and there's only about 65 in a light beer. But, obviously eating 5 apples in a day is better for you than drinking 5 beers. Life's not all about calories...it's about balance. Balance the fruit with lean protein, fiber and some veggies and you'll be fine.
Reply:Yes fruit can be bad in large quantities. There can be quite alot of sugar and starch (especially in Cantalope/Rockmelon) Raw unsalted nut are an alternative option to snack on.
Reply:eat more veggies stop eating so much fruit(yes it does have alot of suger wich are empty calories)
