Small fruit trees or shrubs for part shade?

Any chance there is a fruit tree out there that will do okay in part shade (5 hours direct intense sun) in zone 8? I would particulary like a dwarf tree with multiple varieties grafted on the same rootstock. I know it won't bear as much fruit as it would in full sun..that's okay. We have cold winters here, for fruits that require it.

Hi,

I would look at some mail order places - they have a large selection and they list which zones each variety will grow in and what polinators are needed (if any). Knowing you are in zone 8 is half the battle.

I got a 5 in 1 grafted semi-dward apple tree from Stark Bros - www.starkbros.com that is producing apples in the 3rd year. We also have a 2 in 1 sweet cherry which the deer love. You can also try www.henryfields.com and www.starkbros.com Burgess also has some grafted trees - they are cheep but not the best quality... http://www.eburgess.com/prodnav.asp?cat_...

All these mail order companies give a 1 year guarantee.

Good Luck
Reply:5 hours should be plenty. But your trees are going to grow and get bigger. You will have more shade in the future.
Reply:I've got very cold winters (Canada), and part shade.

I have had excellent results with Nanking Cherry, Boyne raspberries and black currant bushes for many years.
Reply:If those 5 hours of direct sun are in the afternoon - you can plant almost anything. "Sun" is generally 6 hours or more of sun a day - but afternoon sun "counts" more than morning sun. If it's morning sun, then call it part shade. If it's afternoon sun, it's close to full sun.

Serviceberry does well in part-shade. But again, if it's afternoon sun....go ahead and trying almost any small fruit tree that does well in your zone.
