Fruit tree in backyard?

There is a fruit tree in my backyard that was there when we moved in. The fruit is citrus and yellow so we think it's a lemon. It tastes similar to a lemon, but it smells like it would be sweet. It smell kid of like a grapefruit maybe? Any idea what it is?

Depends on the size of the fruit. Grapefruit aregenerally larger than lemons (at least 4 inches in diameter) and round instead of oblong. If the fruit is small and round, it could be a Mexican lemon. Cut one open and taste it.
Reply:Could be a Meyer's lemon which is a natural cross between lemon and sweet orange.

If it smells like a grapefruit, it surely could be; however it should be larger. Ask neighbors or see what's about the neighborhood. If it is grapefruit and the fruit is undersized when ripe, eat what you want, but remove the others and get them out of the yard. Don't want fruit lovin' rats moving in to help with the fruit. Then concentrate in improving the tree's health. Contact your county Cooperative Extension Service to get info in citrus culture and possible pests, how to fertilize, etc.
Reply:You didn't give enough information about this tree. The area where you live. What size is this fruit?Lemons aren't sweet. Need more information.
Reply:It could be a cumquat or a variety of lemon. If the leaves smell like limes when you tear them, it could be a key lime.
