Reply:A tomato is a fruit. So is a cucumber. The thing is where the seeds are ... they aren't in a 'hollow shell' in the center as is a vegetable, and they aren't 'roots' (also vegetables) ... their seeds are in 'sections' inside ... like oranges, apples, pears, and even bananas (LOOK at the inside of a banana, and it looks the same as a tomato or cucumber). They are both fruit, even though we eat them as 'vegetables' because they aren't 'sweet' ...
Reply:I consider it a veggie because when I cook, I combine it with other veggies. I know that I am wrong. I agree with others that posted regarding the issues of the seeds causing it to belong to the fruit family. I think that I once read (or heard) that tomatoes are part of the berry family, not because of the taste or looks, but because they come from a vine or shrub, as opposed to how the majority of other fruits come from trees. It was something along those lines that made it part of the fruit/ berry family. Anyway, I think many people refer to tomatoes as veggies and consider them to be so. It does have to do with the fact that they aren't sweet like most other fruits are.

I'd also like you to know that there is also a veggie that is sometimes thought of as a fruit, called rhubarb. It grows like and resembles celery, but the stalks are pink to deep red instead of green. Since many people may buy it already chopped and frozen, and aren't aware how it looks whole, and they take it to be fruit. When rhubarb is cooked or baked and prepared properly, it's taste becomes sweet. Rhubarb is used in many dessert recipes, like for making pies, etc. and yet it is a vegetable!

Hope you found this info. useful!
Reply:My biology teacher taught me that technically, anything with a seed is a fruit, so in this case tomatoes, peppers, peas, pumpkins, etc. would all be fruits. However, if you're talking about the food pyramid, I'd consider these to be in the veggies section.
Reply:There is controversy even in the horticulture versus cooking world over this. Here is a link that I think you will find with the information that will support both of the opinions.
Reply:It is a tomato, however, it's both the Arkansas state fruit AND vegetable, because it is Arkansas. A fruit is defined if the seeds are in the part you eat. Like a cucumber, an apple, a grape, an orange.
Reply:Tomato-

A widely cultivated South American plant (Lycopersicon esculentum) having edible, fleshy, usually red fruit.

The fruit of this plant.
Reply:usually people tend to think that whatever is sweet is a fruit. and well, whatever isn't is a vegetable. This is not true. If it has seeds in/on it, then it is a fruit. Vegetables don't have seeds.
Reply:First you have a plant, it flowers, the flowers are pollinated, then it sets fruit. Yep them maters are fruit, and mighty tasty sliced with salt. mmm.
Reply:it is a fruit according to books and stuff. but i see it as a veggie...but technically it is a fruit.
Reply:Total fruit

it has seeds and a fruit is defined by seeds

For example, a carrot has no seeds and is a veggie

:-)
Reply:It's a fruit by scientific definition.
Reply:Well I work in a shop and our tills are touch screen it has a fruit and veg section and its on both sections. I say fruit as it grows above ground.
Reply:a tomato comes from

the flower and inside are the seeds. So it is a fruit.
Reply:Scientists say it is a fruit because it conntains seeds but it is used as a veggie...
Reply:It's a fruit because it has seeds. Vegetables are supposed to be seedless.
Reply:It looks like it would belong in the veggie family, but really its a fruit. Weird-I know! lol
Reply:its technically a fruit
Reply:I think it is a fuit but I want it to be a vegtable. :3
Reply:i say veggie but my health teacher says fruit
