Ok so I found out today that I have gestational diabetes.. I am nearly 31 weeks, and up to this point I have eaten fruit on a daily bases.. I have a nurse coming out sometime before the end of the week to explain to me what I can and cant have and how to test my sugar levels and how often and everything.. Anyway. I know I have to cut back on my carb intake and I have to try and stay away from sugar, but does that mean fruit as well.. I alway thought fruit was healthy for you how is that so if diabetics cant even eat it? Please anybody I am really wanting to continue eating all of my fruits, but if it is going to do any harm to me or the baby I will stay away from it.. I just dont know and wont know untill I speak to the nurse about it, but any info before then would be great. Thanks..
Question about fruit and Gestational Diabetes?
yes with GD you need to cut back on fruit and fruit juices and milk which all contain sugar.
It is all about balance. Depending on how high you levels are will determine if diet changes alone will help (hopefully that is all it takes). When you are having a carb such as cracker you need to eat it with something like cheese (a protein) that sometimes lowers the affect the carbs might have on your levels. The nutrionist will go over all of that with you and give you meal plans and ideas. Make sure to eat small meals 5-6 times a day to keep the levels balanced. Your goal is to keep a normal first thing in the morning level, if your levels are high in the morning you will have a hard time keeping it balanced out during the day.
Reply:You can still eat fruit, but you must cut back on it. The nutritionist will fix a diet that is right for you, but I had GD with my son and I was only allowed 1 fruit per day. You must also cut back on milk, bread and vegetables, especially potatoes.
Reply:diabetes is not particular to certain types of sugar it includes all of them and unfortunately that means the sugar in fruit so yes you do have to stay away from it...but look at the bright side you only have 9 weeks left you could have gotten the diagnosis earlier...good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!!!
Reply:There are books out that tell you how many carbs are in most foods, including restaurants. Just eat at your scheduled times and have the amount you are supposed to have. Most vegetables and meats are free and you can snack on them any time. Just check the carb. book because a couple vegetables do have carba, I think. It takes a while, but you will get the hang of it. My ten year old grandson went through what you are for two years , three years ago he go the pump. That pump is from God. He can eat all and everything he wants and the pump takes care of the carbs.
Reply:There is a difference between someone who lives daily with diabetes and gestational diabetes. Where with both you have to watch your carb intake, a "true" diabetic must also watch their sugars. But there is math to the whole thing and you only have to watch the carbs. I had GD when I was pregnant with my son and my diet was similar to this: 30 carbs total for breakfast(no more because, for some reason, it would cause my sugars to go sky high), 30 for snack # 1, 40-60 for lunch, 30 for snack # 2, 60-75 for dinner, and 15-30 for bedtime snack. I would test 3-4 times a day, mainly an hour after I ate, and would watch for my sugars to be below 140 and I would be fine. I also had to take, please excuse my spelling, glyberide(pill) before bed to help regulate my morning blood sugar levels which should be in between 60-95. It's really easy to take care of this so start now by meeting with this nurse and keeping your Dr. updated weekly with your blood sugars. Good luck.
Some info on fruit: quarter of a banana would total at 15 carbs, a small apple(size of a tennis ball) is about 15 carbs, and 1 cup of strawberries whole is 15 carbs!
Reply:i have type one diabetes and im pregnant. they say dont drink juices but fruit is ok. i hope that helped some.
Reply:I had GD with the last 2 of my 3 pregnancies...and will more than likely have it again with this one. The nutritionists at the diabetes center told me and every one in my class that we are allowed 45 carbs per meal. and 30 per snack. I was told to eat 3 meals and 3 snacks a day, and test my sugar 1 hour after every meal. This kills me big time...I love any kind of sandwich, mashed potatoes(homemade with milk) and I love milk. I could drink a gallon or more a day (If I could afford that with the prices these days). We got a book that told you how much of each certain food had how many carbs in them. we were told to avoid Fruit and Fruit juice. Only as a snack, because they have so many carbs in them. Good luck. i hated it, but maybe you'll be able to deal with it better. I have to remind myself on almost an hourly basis that this is for the baby, and I only have to deal with this for a few weeks/months out of my life to keep my baby and me healthy. P.S. In the hospital...they keep you on the low carb diet for a day or so...and you thought regular hospital food was bad.
