How can I get rid of fruit flies?

And where do they come from? My roomie and I are in college and have fairly strict rules when it comes to the kitchen and cleanliness of the apt. So, if fruit flies are attracted to fruit... that makes sense. But we don't have any fruit. We also don't leave food out. Any perishables are sealed and in the fridge. (yep, even bread) Dishes are washed at least twice a day, floors are scrubbed and vacuumed, garbage is taken out, the whole nine yards. We have a clean place, yet we still get fruit flies in here. What else are they attracted to if we don't have any fruit? We live in the middle of downtown in the city, so there aren't any fruit bearing trees in the area. I'm at a loss of what they could be attracted to. Any thoughts?

How can I get rid of fruit flies?
Generally speaking fruit flies like to eat yeast - that's actually what they eat on fruit, the yeast that grows on fermenting flesh of fruit. Keeping your place spick and span is usually a foolproof way to get rid of them, so if you say it's that clean, I'm not sure what they're eating. Possibly some rubbish is hidden somewhere you can't see...? Or it could be that, if you only recently cleaned your place, they're hanging around from their last breeding cycle. They only live four days or so on average, so they might disappear in time.

If not, the following is a more or less foolproof method for getting rid of them. You need a bit of baker's yeast (Fleischman's, etc.), a Mason jar or other similar glass jar, a piece of paper and some good tape - scotch tape will do. With the paper make a small funnel (I usually just fold the paper in half, tape the two sheets together along one edge and cut at a diagonal), big enough to fit over the top of the mason jar, facing downwards. Cut a SMALL hole in the tip of your paper funnel, just a little bit bigger than a fruit fly. Put a bit of yeast - say a quarter teaspoon - in the bottom of the jar, add some warm water and swirl it up good. Then tape the funnel into the mouth of the jar. Make sure you tape thoroughly around the edge of the jar to seal the funnel to it. Your trap is complete. Place it where fruit flies like to hang out, and it will soon start collecting them as they smell that warm, yummy yeast. They're too dumb to escape the tiny hole they crawled in, never fear. Now, you must make sure to kill them every day - you can drown them by filling the bottle up with water WITHOUT removing the funnel (otherwise they'll just fly out) or using boiling hot water to scald them. Make a new trap every day, otherwise the jar will fill up with fruit fly maggots. Which is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen.

P.S. You ought to have fruit!
Reply:Apple cider vinegar with a couple of drops of dishsoap. They're attracted to it and die.
Reply:are you sure they are fruit flies? Do you keep plants? If so, check around the leaves for signs of infestation. If you iive in college digs, then it might be one of your neighbors who is harboring some rotting fruit.
Reply:Dump a little bleach down all drains let sit for few minutes then run water for few minutes
Reply:yup my first guess was to say any plants!! even if a plant LOOKS like it doesnt have flies.. sometimes they do... re pot them... let just the roots soak ina big thing of water for a day or 2 and then stick them in some fresh soil...
Reply:Its kind gross but this will explain everything:
