Are bananas a fruit? My friend says that a fruit is anything that is "picked" off a plant. But beans are

picked off plants and they are in the meat group. How can you tell if something is a fruit or vegetable. Some vegetables like corn come from the ground or are plowed up. Most fruits are red like apples or pears. Do plums have insects in them. I have never seen one with an insect but I did see a bug crawling across a plum tree leaf. What about bugs in fruits or vegatables. Do bugs eat beans? My dog will eat beans from the can but when we go in the fields he won't eat the beans. He likes to run into the water by the road and then shake himself. I have not been out of the county and don't know what everyone thinks of fruits or vegetables or meats or beans? Good luck.

Vegetables typically grow in the ground (like carrots or potatoes)

Fruits typically grow on trees, bushes, or vines. So to answer your question: yes, a banana is a fruit.
Reply:all fruits have seeds in them, vegetable do not
Reply:I looked into this before and it seems there is no clear distinction between a fruit and a vegetable. Some say the difference is the seeds from fruits can be germinated to produce a plant that can bear more fruit where it's harder for vegetables to do this. But this excludes the fruit banana because it does not have seeds to re-grow itself.
Reply:Bananas are actually classified as an herb. Strange, but true. Scroll to the bottom of http://homecooking.about.com/library/wee... for more info.
Reply:Beans are NOT in the meat group, they are a vegetable substitute for protein found in meat. Because bananas hold the seeds of the plant inside them, they area a fruit.
Reply:A fruit is actually the sweet, ripened ovary or ovaries of a seed-bearing plant. A vegetable, in contrast, is an herbaceous plant cultivated for an edible part (seeds, roots, stems, leaves, bulbs, tubers, or nonsweet fruits). So, to be really nitpicky, a fruit could be a vegetable, but a vegetable could not be a fruit.
Reply:Yes, bananas are a type of fruit, but not because you can pick them off a plant but because it is a fleshy ovary of a fruit that contains ovules (seeds).

Vegetables do not come from this part of the plant and do not have seeds.

No, there are many kinds of colors in fruits, like yellows, greens, reds and browns.

Not all plums have insects on them, depends where you buy them and if they have been cleaned.

Bugs will always be on plant trees, thats what they feed on.

Bugs may eat beans since they sometimes eat seeds, and beans are seeds.
